Ways to Lose Weight Without the Gym

Some of us may not be able to afford a personal fitness trainer or a gym membership to help us take off the pounds. Others may not even like working out at a gym for personal reasons. You don't have to let the lack of having a gym or trainer deter you from losing weight. Here are some ways you can still lose weight and get in shape without going to the gym:

Dance

Dancing is a fun way to lose weight. If you prefer to do it at home, you can find some upbeat music and crank up the stereo. Shake your booty, wiggle your hips, drop it, and move those arms and legs! Dancing for 30 minutes to an hour per day can burn a significant amount of calories.

If you don't want to dance at home alone, you can opt to sign up for dance classes. Here are a few fun suggestions that can help you in your quest to lose weight:

  • Belly Dancing
Belly dancing targets many different muscles in the body and is a great cardio-vascular exercise. You can burn between 250 to 300 calories during an intense hour of belly dancing. If you want to shake, shimmy and spin your way into a slimmer you, try belly dancing.

  • Hip-hop Dance
This popular style incorporates the latest hip hop music and dance moves. A hip-hop workout will be sure to make you break a sweat. You can burn between 200 and 300 calories in an hour session, depending on the type of dance. Hip-hop dance is something you can enjoy, and it’s far from being a boring exercise routine.

  • Pole Dancing
Pole dancing is no longer restricted to exotic dancers and the strip clubs. It is now a fun, sexy way to build up confidence and shed some pounds. In an hour, you can burn from 200 to 450 calories pole dancing, depending on the intensity. Pole dancing is also great for strength training because it targets the arms, legs, and abs.

  • Zumba
Zumba fitness is a combination of international music and Latin with simple dance choreography. Your heart will be pumping and your feet moving during every workout. Resistance training incorporated into the routines help to burn calories and tone the entire body. Another thing about Zumba: it’s fun!

Exercise DVDs

If you’re not a gym enthusiast, a great way to tone up, lose weight and build muscle is by watching exercise DVDs. Some popular exercise DVDs for beginners that will help you tone up are: Hip Hop Abs, TurboJam, 10-Minute Trainer, and Slim6. Insanity, P90X, or T25 are more intense advanced workouts.

Jump Rope

If you jump rope for 10 minutes, you can quickly burn about 135 calories. Do two 10-minute sessions and burn more than 200 calories. All you need is a jump rope, which can be purchased at your local Wal-Mart for $15 or less. Jumping rope can also sculpt your legs, shoulders, arms and chest.

Take a Martial Arts Class

Kick, punch, or chop your way into a fit body by taking kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, boxing, judo or karate. Since martial arts training is high intensity and lasts an hour, you will burn plenty of calories. There are several different forms you can choose from, so it shouldn't be difficult to find one that's suitable for you. Martial arts will keep you motivated because it’s a lot more exciting than a treadmill or jogging.

YouTube Workout Videos

The internet is a great way to search for free workout videos. A popular place is YouTube. If you search for workout videos on YouTube, you will get over 9,000 results. Several workout videos are geared toward the beginner, intermediate, and the more advanced. With so many choices of workout videos available online, just about anyone should be able to choose one that fits their needs.
